Appalachian State University, Assistant Director for Community Service, Appalachian, & the Community Together (ACT)

Description 

 The Assistant Director of Community Service shares responsibility for the development and implementation of co-curricular service programs designed to enhance the co-curricular environment at ASU while simultaneously meeting community needs.

The Assistant Director will provide volunteer options and guidance to clubs & organizations, and will oversee coordination of all ACT special events (including but not limited to the MLK Challenge, Dance Marathon, Earth Week, and Don't Throw it Away/BIG Sale.) The Assistant Director will share programming budgetary coordination for ACT. The Assistant Director will also serve as advisor to the Alternative Spring Break program, including domestic & international programs.

The opportunity exists to eventually teach service-learning and/or leadership development courses. This staff member will participate in the supervision and educational efforts of three Graduate Assistants. The Assistant Director of Community Service reports directly to the Associate Director of Student Programs & Community Service. Occasional evening and weekend work expected as part of a flexible work schedule.

Qualifications               

Prefer 3 years full-time experience in working in a higher education setting or social service field. 2 or more years working with student leaders in a community service and/or service-learning program also preferred. Masters Degree in College Student Development or related field required. Starting date for this position is July 1, 2008.

Voorhees College, Director of Residential Life and Housing 

Description                  

      Establishes qualifications for various duties of Residential Life and Housing staff on continual study of advising performance and analysis of qualities of successful staff.   Establishes goals and objectives for residence hall programs in conjunction with the Vice President for Student Affairs.  Develops and maintains a program designed to broaden students’ educational, cultural, social, and spiritual opportunities. 

      Responsible for continual evaluation of goals and objectives and their implementation.   Responsible for conducting area meetings when assigning staff to their responsibilities for the development of staff training programs both prior to the academic year and in-service development of all staff levels throughout the academic year.  Supervises policies and procedures related to residence living in conjunction with the Vice President for Student Affairs.  Encourages, executes and supervises research in the area of group living. 

      Participates in the Freshmen Year Experience Orientation process of new students and parents in assisting students in the transition from home to college.  Responsible for investigating student disciplinary problems in the residence halls and applying appropriate actions for resolution.  Counsels individual students with their problems and makes referrals to other Student Affairs sources where appropriate.  Coordinates efforts of residence hall programs with related college administrative groups (Food Service, Health Service, Academic Affairs, Faculty, Staff, etc.)

        Represents the College and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs at professional meetings and internally, before groups of students, faculty, staff and the community.  Responsible for the recruitment and selection of Residential Life and Housing staff, i.e. Residence Coordinators, Assistant Residence Coordinators, Resident Assistants and Work study students.  Evaluates individual staff members as well as the overall Residence Hall programs.  Receives housing applications forms and coordinates the room assignment process for students who desire to reside in housing.  Duties and responsibilities include all of the above but are not limited to the aforementioned. Some in-kind services may be needed.  Confers regularly with the Vice President of Student Affairs

Qualifications               

Masters Degree in Student Personnel Services or related fields, such as Counseling,  Guidance, Psychology, or Education is preferred, however, military and professional relevant years of experiences will be considered.

East Carolina University, Academic Advisor (full time position)

Description                  

The selected candidate will work in the College of Technology and Computer Science Advising Center. Responsibilities of this position include providing individual academic counseling to students on academic matters such as selection of a major area of study, course selection, and academic performance; guiding students in development of decision-making skills and providing instruction through intervention workshops; and creating programs, workshops, and other initiatives to enhance students' academic performance from a prevention and intervention perspective.

The selected candidate will also coordinate the academic orientation of new students and/or new majors and support the university's goals through developing and implementing a student development approach to academic advising; meet and advise students and parents during visitation days and freshman orientation; and provide academic advising and mentoring to undergraduate and graduate students in technology systems, computer science, construction management, and engineering. This position may be responsible for advising non-traditional, distance education, and/or transfer students and will utilize a variety of methods for advising, such as phone, computer, face to face, and printed materials. This position will report to the Lead Advisor in the College of Technology and Computer Science.  

Qualifications               

A master's degree in an appropriate field from an accredited institution is required. Experience in academic advising or counseling in an institution of higher education is preferred.

Appalachian State University, Director of Housing and Residence Life

Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Director of Housing and Residence Life.  Appalachian is a member institution of The University of North Carolina System and has an enrollment of over 15,000 students with more than 5,000 students currently living in University residence halls.

Description                  

The Director of Housing and Residence Life reports to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Development.  The Director is responsible for all aspects of student housing operations and residence life administration and programs.  Responsibilities include residence hall construction, renovation and maintenance, personnel, student assignments, contract administration, educational programs, and student development.  Additionally, the Director will be actively involved with the implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan, with Learning Communities being an integral part of this plan.

Qualifications               

The Director of Housing and Residence Life will have a minimum of a master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, or a related field.  The Director will have a minimum of five years of professional experience at the central office level of a university residence hall program.  Demonstrated skills of leadership and communication, involvement in relevant professional associations, a well-developed sense of responsibility, sensitivity to individual differences, and an obvious interest and enthusiasm for working with students are characteristics expected of this person.

California State University, Northridge, Director of the Center on Disabilities

Description                  

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Student Access and Support Services in the Division of Student Affairs, the Director provides vision, leadership, and management direction for the Center on Disabilities (COD).  The Director leads a staff of 23 in building sustainable programs that foster and support a learning-centered environment.  The incumbent will be responsible for assessment and evaluation activities, program design, policy development, human and fiscal resource management, fundraising, and the application of research in the field of disabilities studies.  The annual operating budget of the Center is $2.3M.

Qualifications               

The person must have a demonstrated record of success in leading and participating in institution-wide collaborative efforts.  The successful person will understand the role and mission of Student Affairs, will be able to function as an effective change manager, is an experienced fund raiser, is familiar with best practice in the field, and has a comprehensive understanding of legal and policy-related concerns in the area of disability.  Outstanding skills in managing many diverse projects and programs, strategic planning, marketing and promoting programs to internal and external stakeholders, and excellent interpersonal communication and platform skills are required.  The person must have significant experience in the areas of assessment and evaluation, development of student learning outcomes, disability services, and integration of theory and research into practice. A terminal degree in Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Psychology, Educational Psychology, or related field is strongly preferred.

Residence Life and Multicultural Center; Reports to Director of Residence Life and Director of Multicultural Center

Assistant Director of Residence Life - Directs and manages residential area of 267 students within the Residence Life department in a suite style living environment. (Full time, 12 month, live-in)
Assistant Director of Multicultural Center - Part-time, ten hours a week, 12-month position.  The Assistant Director of the Multicultural Center works in partnership with the Director of the Multicultural Center to create programs and services that produce positive effects on multicultural student retention and success, and provide the campus with diversity education experiences.  The position requires some evening and occasional weekend work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assistant Director of Residence Life (75%)

  • Responsible for total administration of residential communities within one’s area of supervision.

  • Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate student staff, a professional part-time Area Assistant and student office assistants.

  • Develop student leadership opportunities and work to enhance area community.

  • Promote staff teamwork and coordinate staff duty / area coverage. 

  • Advise community government and support area wide community development.

  • Maintain daily student contact within residential area.

  • Create strong partnerships within the Student Life division and with other department’s on-campus, including:  faculty, security/campus police, dining services, academic support services, physical plant, and administrative offices. 

  • Promote departmental community development model, provide leadership to student staff for implementation and oversee area community development budget.

  • Maintain accurate records regarding occupancy, room changes, maintenance requests, damage billing, laundry repair, etc.

  • Provide appropriate referrals for students regarding academic, social, and psychological issues. 

  • Serve as a judicial hearing officer and support the divisional protocol regarding the student code of conduct.

  • Serve in one or more capacities in support of the department:  Advise the Resident Student Association (RSA), Coordinate staff selection process, Coordinate student staff training/development/recognition, Coordinate summer conferences and summer housing, and Other functional area responsibilities as named by departmental leadership.

  • Manage department projects/initiatives at the direction of Director of Residence Life. 

  • Support divisional and departmental goals.

Assistant Director of Multicultural Center (25%)

  • Recruit and serve as advisor to the Diversity Emerging Education Program (DEEP)

  • Meet with student leaders of organizations, Multicultural Leadership Roundtable, fostering cultural diversity to provide support, and develop a strategy that will increase membership, strengthen leadership skills and enhance the overall development and advancement of each organization;

  • Be available for occasional (define) weekend travel for student leadership conferences and retreats;

  • Works under the direct supervision and receive instruction from the Director of Multicultural Affairs

  • Serve as a resource for issues involving multicultural students and diversity for the university community;

  • Work with Director on developing a strategy for increasing involvement and participation in the Multicultural Center of groups fostering cultural diversity.

  • Provide professional guidance to student groups fostering cultural diversity and identify ways in which these groups can work more with the Multicultural Center;

  • Serve as a liaison between students and staff;

Direct supervision of one part-time professional Area Assistant and 8-10 student staff.  Supervises Student Program Coordinator of DEEP

The Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is seeking a motivated professional for an employment opportunity in the Office of Student Development and Activities, Student Union.  Advise and support comprehensive large event programming, by students, through the Student Union, and other campus venues; assess programs.  Advise/assist Student Activities programs, especially those sponsored by Program Board and Homecoming and other university celebrations.
