President's Pen

As we find ourselves halfway through the Fall Semester and preparing to head into upcoming holiday seasons and final exams, I encourage everyone to stop and take time for yourself—both professionally and personally. It is very easy in our profession to sometimes get overwhelmed with trying to meet the needs of everyone around us except ourselves.

Remember that in order to best serve our students, we need to make sure that we remember to take care of ourselves a variety of ways—mentally, spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Let NCCPA serve as a valuable resource in helping you to develop not only as a professional in higher education but also as an individual.

NCCPA's Executive Board is constantly seeking ways to provide you with the resources and information needed to assist you in your career. If you haven't already done so, please visit our website and enjoy its updated look (http://mynccpa.org). I encourage each of you to become involved in a committee of NCCPA and help our organization continue its great work in student affairs and higher education.

NCCPA recently held its annual conference November 4th and 5th at the Hawthorne Inn & Conference Center. With approximately 55 attendees, the conference was an excellent time to catch up with colleagues, welcome new members and professionals to the state, and attend a variety of programs addressing current topics within higher education. More professional development opportunities are on the horizon for NCCPA for the upcoming spring semester, including our highly-successful annual LEAD conference (hosted this year by NC Central University), our Administrative Personnel Conference (hosted this year by NC State), and our ACPA Road Show (hosted once again this year by Davidson College). More information on these opportunities for both staff and student leaders can be found within this newsletter as well as on our website.

If you were not able to attend our conference to renew your membership with NCCPA, please take a moment to do so (http://www.mynccpa.org/join.php). One of NCCPA's goals is to increase its membership this year and we're already on a great start to meeting this goal, but we need you to join or renew your membership if you currently have not done so. At $26.00 for professionals and $21.00 for graduate students, it's definitely a professional development bargain!

The Executive Board and I look forward to continuing to serve higher education professionals across North Carolina and hope that you will join us in our journey to turn “innovative ideas” into “revolutionary results.”
